  A paper “A Facile Method to Fabricate an Enclosed Paper-Based Analytical Device via Double-Sided Patterning for Ionic Contaminant Detection” by a research team of Kang Sung-min professor of the Department of Green Chemical Engineering at Sangmyung University (SMU) was published in the SCI International Academic Journal (Biosensors, IF:5.400). Lee Eun-ho, 3rd grade in Sangmyung University’s Department of Green Chemical Engineering participated as the first author in the paper. In this article, I will take a closer look at the paper written by a research team of Sangmyung University.


  Microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (μPAD) which are conventional devices and an open-channel system have limitations for application as analytical platforms because of the evaporation and contamination of the sample solution. Professor Kang Sung-min’s research team demonstrates the design and fabrication of an enclosed three-dimensional(3D)-μPAD. This study has also presented the application as a primary early analysis platform. Through this study, heavy metal ions such as copper (Cu2+), nickel (Ni2+), and mercury (Hg2+), which lead the contamination of water, as well as radioactive cesium-137 ions (Cs+) can be detected though color changes simultaneously. An Enclosed three-dimensional(3D)-μPAD could be used as primary early detection sensors for water pollution enabling multiple analyses of unknown samples, it is expected to contribute to the development of environmental monitoring and biosensors field.


  The research was conducted by the collaborative research team of Professor Kang Sung-min from the Department of Green Chemical Engineering at Sangmyung University and Professor Jeong Heon-ho from the Department of Chemical and Engineering at Chonnam National University. This research was supported by the Basic Science Research Program through the National Research Foundation of Korea.

  Lee Eun-ho, 3rd grade majoring in Green Chemical Engineering at Sangmyung University, participated as the first author in the paper said, “There were many difficulties in research and experiments, as an undergraduate student. I would like to thank advisor Professor Kang Sung-min and Professor Jeong Heon-ho from Chonnam National University for guiding me to complete our paper. It was a great experience for me.” He also said, “I plan to stay committed to my studies and enter graduate school after completing my bachelor’s degree.Professor Kang Sung-min said, “This study can relieve social anxiety about water pollution from various contaminants. Therefore, it is expected to contribute to the development of the biosensors field through paper sensors that can be easily used by anyone.”
