Reorganization of Relative Evaluation Rating Ratio

  From the first semester of 2023, the ratio of relative evaluation grades was reorganized when giving credits in our university. Before the reorganization, it was operated so that students could receive each grade A, B, and C at a rate of 30%, 40%, and 30% of all students. However, after the reorganization, up to 45% of the total students could receive credits equivalent to A+ and A, and credits equivalent to B+ or less could be given by discretion of the professor. The background of the reorganization as mentioned above was explained by the Academic Affairs Office of this school as follows: “Given that the ratio of receiving A credits from Sangmyung University is currently lower than that of other universities, the school's Academic Affairs Office intends to ease the criteria for benefits under the judgment that it may be difficult for students to secure competitiveness in the job market in the future.”

Arguments for Approval

  The opinion in favor is argued as follows. It is possible to increase credit competitiveness in the job market compared to other universities and to reduce academic burdens and prevent overheating of competition by easing standards. It also provides an opportunity for students to participate in extracurricular activities by alleviating fatigue with credits.

Arguments for Disapproval

  The opposing position argues as follows. If the evaluation criteria are eased, the screening criteria may become ambiguous as the ratio of high ranked students expands, reducing discrimination and increasing the number of recipients of academic scholarships. In addition, individual students' understanding of their major may decrease, and the number of people who do not achieve academic achievement may increase.


  I think that both the pros and cons have reasonable reasons. However, I think it is too much that the ratio of credits corresponding to A and A+ is 45%. It is good to increase students' credit competitiveness in the job market, but if the ratio of A and A+ is too high, students may lose motivation for their studies. In particular, what is more important in recent years is practical abilities rather than credits themselves, so I think it is important for students to voluntarily improve their understanding of their major. Anyway, the reorganization is definitive, so even if there is something that you don't like, it would be desirable to find ways to improve your abilities and do well in school accordingly.
